Configuring spellcheck

Versions: 4.20, FAQ number: 86, Old FAQ number: 1042

Below are some issues related to the spellcheck tool in the new editor found in EPiServer 4.20 and later. Note that the spellcheck tool integrates with Microsoft Office version 2000 or XP, and as such cannot be used without a working Office installation.

Q: How do I configure the spellchecker to use a specific language?

A: Being integrated with Microsoft Office, the spellcheck tool will use the current settings for the Office product. Language options are found in the Tools > Language > Set Language menu in Microsoft Word (shown below).

When using the "Detect language automatically" option, the results can sometimes be unpredictable based on the contents of the current text and how Microsoft Office determines which language it is most likely to represent.

The same option may also cause your spellcheck attempts to fail if you do not have the correct dictionaries installed for the detected language. The tool cannot deliver the specific reason of the failure to you, and most likely the spellcheck will apear to have passed without remarks.

To receive predictable results with the spellcheck tool we recommend unchecking the "Detect language automatically" as well as marking the desired language as the "Default" in Microsoft Word. When these settings are changed the Word application should be closed in order to ensure the spellcheck tool will use the updated settings when triggered.
